Ultimate vs. supreme

Shiro Yamaoka and Yuko Kurita, who work for Tozai Newspaper that is one of the best newspaper companies in Japan, are to create “an ultimate menu” that is a collection of best foods in the world. At the same time, however, their rival company, Teito Newspaper started their project to create “an supreme menu” in cooperated with Yuzan Kaibara, who is a ceramic artist as well as chirographer and famous as living natural treasure, and who also organizes clubs for the best food. Shiro’s family name is his mother’s maiden name and he was in fact Yuzan’s son. Shiro had conflict with his father about his mother’s death and cut his connection with his father. But again, the conflict between father and son is repeated through “an ultimate vs. supreme menu”.

This sparks the buzzword “ultimate” and the boom of gourmet. This is not just a gourmet comic but a social comic which tries to find the basics of Japanese through food by describing the problems of food culture in current Japan
